Questions & Answers

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked, and the answers to go with them. If you have a question that is not answered below, please contact us to ask us, we're always happy to answer questions if we can!

What car can take part in The Italian Job?
Any Mini or Mini based car regardless of age, size colour, variation or shape and any of the classic cars which featured in The Michael Caine film.

Can anybody participate in the event?
Yes provided the driver is a minimum of 21 years old and the co-driver 19 years old. Both must have a valid driving licence and be willing to raise as much money as possible in aid of the supported charities.

Do we have to reach a minimum Sponsorship Target in order to participate?
No, you will still be allowed to participate no matter how much money you have raised by the time the event departs for Italy as you can collect pledges and continue to fundraise after the event has returned up until February when our annual accounts are closed. We do set each team a target amount of £1500 per car and we expect that you will do your very best to reach it. We will give you as much help and guidance as possible to ensure you get as close as possible. Once you do reach your target though, DON'T stop, keep going!

Do we need a competition licence?
No a standard driving licence is all you need. You will need to show scrutineers your driving licence at the Registration Point at the start of the event. You will also need to demonstrate that your car has a valid MOT (where relevant), is taxed for a minimum period of 6 months prior to the start date, is fully insured and covered by some form of European breakdown cover. We also ask that you present proof of a recent service at scrutineering.

Does our mini need to be fitted with safety devices or be race / rally prepared?
No, there is absolutely no need for there are no speed or racing elements at all during the Italian Job. You and your road standard Mini will participate in a fun reliability trial event (the Rally), where the ability to drive your car in the correct direction will be dictated by your co-driver's ability to navigate.

We are not mechanically minded? Is there any help?
A fully equipped service van manned by experienced and knowledgeable crew of top notch vehicle technicians follow the event and keep the Minis rolling. The service van is full to overflowing with spare parts and accessories. We do recommend that you take a few essential items with you - spare light bulbs etc...as well as a few basic tools.

Where does the event start and finish?
The START of the Italian Job is generally in a selected venue in northern Italy, but this does vary occasionally. It is here that your car will be scrutinised and your vehicle documents checked. The FINISH is always at a selected venue in the UK where our black tie Gala Dinner & award presentations also take place.

How much it does cost?
The team entry fee (one car and 2 persons) is £500, and can be sponsored by a Company in exchange of advertising on your car. The hotel costs vary depending upon the duration of each Italian Job but as a guide you should budget for between £60 and £65 per person per day inclusive of meals. Final hotel costs are confirmed by the April preceding the Italian Job.

How do we Register?
Go to our Downloads section and print off the PDF Entry Forms and Rules and Regulations. Read the rules carefully, complete the Entry Form and return it to us together with your deposit cheque of £250 to secure your team number. Your cheque should be issued payable to the 'Italian Job'. Alternatively call us on (0044) 01273 418100 or email us at entry@italianjob.com and we'll send you an entry application pack by return.

What happens next?
Once we have received your completed entry form and entry fee deposit you will receive a confirmation of acceptance from us normally within 7 days. You will also receive your fundraising pack with some valuable suggestions and ideas regarding fundraising. You can contact us during normal office hours by phone, fax or email - we can put you in touch with other participants in your area, help you contact your local newspapers And also assist you in contacting potential sponsors. The organiser's office is here to be of as much assistance to you as possible.

What is the registration & scruteneering all about?
At the registration we will check that your driving licence, car insurance, tax, MOT are in order whilst our technicians will check your car's general roadworthiness (checking brakes, indicators, windscreen wipers, lights, tyres etc) to ensure that it is up to the challenging few days of reliability trials which lay ahead. It is only once your documents have been checked and your car scrutineered successfully that we give you your official entry numbers to AFFIX onto your door logos. Should there be ANY problems with either your paperwork or your car you will be only be allowed to follow the "rally route" but NOT to actually participate.

What is the 'Road Book'?
It is your treasure map for the "rallying" in Italy. It is an A5 size tulip design book which will take you well off the beaten track through some truly splendid places. The tulip diagrams are accompanied by time indications, notification of time controls, special stages, passage controls and it indicates precise mileages. If the thought of this is daunting, then worry not, for we will give all teams a thorough briefing just after registration and scrutineering in Italy.
